As usual, my visit to Maison Lucien Le Moine, conveniently located opposite the fantastic La Dilettante bistro, whose lasagna I highly recommend, was later than other growers. That is because Mounir’s approach towards élevage means that the wines tend to ferment at a sauntering pace and occasionally contain more gas. Before tasting his portfolio, which takes a fortnight to complete, Mounir showed me two new underground annexes so that he no longer has to work in cramped conditions. Then, after gossiping like bored housewives over the back garden fence, we discussed the 2014 vintage…
« Maturity came quickly, » he told me, sporting his trademark baseball cap, candid opinion ricocheting off the vaulted cobbled walls. « It is a fresh vintage. My concern in October was to block the malolactic. Elsewhere, a lot of 2014s were finishing malolactic by Christmas, but we were doing malolactic the following August and September.
For whites we had cold temperatures in the cellar, which meant that by Christmas I had between five to fifteen grams per liter of sugar. So we were doing the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation at the same time, plus you had an injection of CO2 in the summer. When winter came, the 2014s started going the same way as 2013s. The wines were a bit?monotonous. I found ‘non-typical’ detail in the wines. I could not see the weight of the dry extract. Then we had one week of cold weather just before the Hospices auction and we opened the doors all day [to cool the cellar temperature]. The lees went down and the wines became fresh.
We tasted the barrels once again and finally we found the beginning of ‘someone to talk to.’ So I decided to extend our aging and the characteristics of the terroir is now becoming clear. So all white and red 2014s that we are tasting from barrel here have never been racked and never sulfured. We will start bottling June or July, the grand crus just before harvest and the last wines after harvest. I had to push the whites to become deep wines. We must have enough extraction, lees and time in barrel, and the white 2014s did malolactic a year after harvest. »
Mounir’s modus operandi in the cellar is different to a majority of other growers – more reductive and slower, almost the antithesis of say Bordeaux, where the wines are ushered through malolactic as soon as the umbilical is cut. The thing is…it works. His wines need to be handled correctly, allowed commensurate bottle age and crucially, affording them plenty of decanting and aeration. These are not wines to uncork and pour. Don’t be afraid to give them a rigorous shake, splash them into a jug if you feel the need, allow them time to open and you will be rewarded.

The 2014 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru appears to offer more finesse and cohesion on the nose when compared to its Clos Saint Denis sibling. It seems to shimmer in the glass, vivid and vivacious. The palate is supple in the mouth with hints of orange sorbet infusing the pure red berry fruit, the acidity well judged and a very harmonious, silky smooth finish lingers long in the mouth. This is an excellent Clos de la Roche in the making, hopefully in the same vein as the outstanding 2005 that I tasted just a couple of days after my visit. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru had a reticent bouquet when I tasted it from barrel, much more taciturn than the Bâtard. The palate is a different matter – tensile and nervous, a superb seam of acidity and great weight towards the finish. Everything is here – a great, indeed « kingly » Chevalier in the making. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a blend of the north and south parts of the vineyard (here blended together) has a plush redcurrant, cranberry and strawberry scented bouquet with fine delineation. The palate is crisp and taut with red cherries and wild strawberry, steely and focused with a touch of white pepper on the long finish. This is one of the best reds from Lucien Le Moine in 2014, not a flamboyant Bonnes-Mares, but correct and blue-blooded. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières is touching grand cru quality, an absolute peach of a wine. It has a linear, stony, smoke-tinged bouquet that is the most sophisticated of Mounir’s Meursaults. The palate is fresh and vibrant with fresh pear and citrus notes, long and sustained in the mouth with a saline finish that begs another sip. The pedigree of the vineyard is embroidered into this wine and it comes highly recommended, though it will deserve 3-4 years of bottle age. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Genaivrières has an attractive raspberry and bilberry scented bouquet that is more vigorous than the Clos des Ormes at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, supple in the mouth with commendable weight and persistence on the punchy, quite assertive finish. This will certainly be worth checking out once in bottle. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers has one of the most accomplished and harmonious bouquet of the Gevreys with lovely, very pure raspberry and fresh cranberry scents, a hint of bergamot and iris developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, redcurrant and cranberry notes, a touch of orange zest with a hint of volatile acidity on the finish just giving it a kick. This is the most feisty of their premier cru Gevrey’s and probably the one that I would pick. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru has a withdrawn bouquet at first, only gradually unfolding with light cranberry leaf, bay leaf and strawberry scents, a cold stone note emerging later. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite focused and poised, although I would like to see more weight and body develop on the finish. It seems to have stage fright compared to the Clos de la Roche. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a crisp, undergrowth-tinged bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and faint sea-spray scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy, sorbet-fresh red fruit, a little savoriness here, nice depth if needing a little more finesse to develop on the finish. Perhaps just curtailed by the growing season? At the moment, both the Gaudichot and Les Malconsorts outplay this grand cru. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts Doix has a fresh red cherry, bergamot and smoke-tinged bouquet that opens nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite firm tannin framing raspberry and blackberry fruit, a little masculine in style with a touch of white pepper lingering on the finish. The 2014 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a crisp, white chocolate-tinged bouquet with orange blossom scents overtaking those with time in the glass. The palate is vibrant and peachy on the entry, a tropical-inclined Criots with white chocolate and pralines returning on the aftertaste. A very well-made Criots this year from Lucien Le Moine, though it is a couple of lengths behind the Chevalier-Montrachet. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes has a clean and precise bouquet with lifted red cherries, crushed strawberry and cold limestone scents. The 2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has a very pure raspberry and wild strawberry bouquet mixed with sous-bois and even a touch of menthol. One of the most exotic perfumes amongst the plethora of reds. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin that kind of brings you down to earth: dense in the mouth but for me, just a little austere on the finish in the context of the vineyard. I’ll be conservative at the moment with my score and hope that the palate catches up with the nose by the time it is bottled. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques has a crisp, stony, quite reserved bouquet at the moment. This is taciturn. The palate is more expressive with tart red cherry fruit and a touch of cranberry, nicely structured with a piquant finish that lingers. Pretty and delicate, this is one of Mounir’s wines that I might broach earlier than others. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru was a little anonymous on the nose when I tasted it, obviously not coming out to play! The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity and quite a sensual finish for a Latricières. This has good potential, although it does not shrug off this vineyard predilection for being stubbornly foursquare and conservative. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru « Reserve MS » comes from a secret recipe that Mounier did not disclose to me (and I promise, I did try), and it will be bottled only in magnum. It has a broody, dark berry, blackberry and briary scented bouquet tinged with orange sorbet and apricot. You can detect a scintilla of carbonic maceration here – in a pleasurable sense. The palate is medium-bodied with good density, oodles of sappy black cherry fruit and it segues with a Morgon-like towards the finish. This is…intriguing and quite delicious…but different! -Neal Martin

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots has a cohesive, strawberry and Morello cherry scented nose, tight at first but opening with aeration. The palate is lively and energetic on the entry, perhaps a suggestions of volatile acidity on the tip of the tongue, segueing into a saline, slightly tapered finish. Give this 2-3 years in bottle before reaching for the corkscrew. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has a perfumed, floral bouquet with hints of rose petal infusing the strawberry and red cherry fruit. The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes has a strict and lightly honeyed bouquet that perhaps just lacks a little personality at the moment. The palate is well balanced and again, lightly honeyed with touches of white peach and grapefruit, modest concentration on the finish. This premier did not reach the heights of Genevrières or Perrières in this vintage, and this Charmes is another that just suffers by comparison to other vineyards. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de Mouches Rouge, which of course was 90% hailed, has a light red cherry and cranberry bouquet that seems to shrug off the impact of those pernicious ice bullets. The palate is underpinned by fresh acidity, crunchy red berry fruit with a brisk, chalky finish that urges you to take another sip. While not the best Beaune premier cru that I have encountered, it still deserves a polite clap for enduring the hail and coming through to the other side. -Neal Martin

The 2014 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Ormes has a slightly conservative bouquet with solid raspberry and strawberry fruit that just need a little more « motion. » The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a little foursquare in the mouth, but with an attractive, sustained strawberry and white pepper aftertaste. It just needs to dial up the conviction – the Genavrières seems to have more chutzpah at the moment. -Neal Martin
